South Korea’s Ministry of the Interior and Safety will switch the operating system of its computers from Windows to Linux. According to the reports, the decision is being taken in view of expiry of Microsoft’s free technical support for Windows 7 on January 14 next year.

The transition to Linux OS and the purchase of new PCs are expected to cost the government about 780 billion won ($655 million) but to Choi Jang-hyuk, Service Bureau Chief of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, said the ministry expects a long-term cost savings through the introduction of the open-source OS and also hopes to reduce reliance on a single operating system.

The ministry would first embark on test-running Linux on its PCs and if no security or compatibility issues arise, Linux systems will be find their use more widely within the government.

It will be pertinent to see if other governments make the transition.
